The Facts You Need

We know voters have questions—and we’re here to answer them. Get the facts on cost, tax impact, building design, and what happens if the referendum fails.

  • Aging Facility

Abington Middle School was built in 1964 and no longer meets the needs of today’s students. It lacks ADA compliance, has outdated systems, and overcrowded learning environments. By 2032, enrollment is projected to exceed capacity by 15%.

  • Minimal Disruption to Learning

Students will remain in the current building during construction, avoiding the need for modular classrooms and limiting disruptions to day-to-day learning.

  • Design Features

The new school will be fully ADA compliant, energy efficient, and designed for 21st-century learning—featuring flexible spaces, enhanced security, and inclusive infrastructure.

  • Future-Focused Design

The proposed school supports a “small school” model, with grade-specific communities that create more personalized, collaborative, and engaging learning environments.

  • Community-Driven Planning

This plan is the result of a multi-year process that included surveys, public meetings, and direct feedback from families, teachers, students, and residents.

  • Cost Comparison

Renovating the existing building would cost approximately $206 million, offering fewer educational benefits and requiring extensive disruption during construction. A new school, estimated at $285 million, is a more cost-effective, long-term solution that avoids modular classrooms and phased renovations.

  • Tax Impact

The referendum would result in an average monthly increase of about $54 for the typical Abington household. This amount is based on conservative financial estimates and is subject to annual bond disclosures and board approval. Use the tax calculator for a customized estimate.

  • Accountability & Oversight

The District will use a program management model to ensure close oversight, minimize risk, and manage contracts efficiently. ICS, the selected firm, will report monthly to the Board and community on progress and costs.
